Volunteers required by the Black Dog Institute!

The Black Dog Institute is an organisation dedicated to advancing the understanding, diagnosis and management of mood disorders. This mission is supported through a wide range of research studies, in addition to educational, clinical and community-based services.

The Black Dog Institute will be conducting an innovative study on exercise, mood and depression at the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival on Sunday 21st September 2008. In order to do so, they will need a large team of volunteers to help them to survey runners in the events. Volunteers would be trained and supervised by Institute staff.

This represents an excellent opportunity to gain experience in conducting field research, and to gain insight into the activities of the Black Dog Institute. Students with an interest in mood disorders, health/sports psychology or research in clinical psychology may be particularly interested in volunteering. A training session for volunteers will be held at 6pm on Wednesday 17th September at the Black Dog Institute in Randwick.

For more information, or to register as a volunteer, please call Jo Crawford on (02) 9382 3769 or email jo.crawford@unsw.edu.au

Psychology: Science or Pseudoscience? Debate

When: 4-5pm Thursday 3 April

Where: Level 10 Matthews staff room

What: Psychology Prof Jim Kehoe vs Psychology critic Dr Peter Slezak

Last year Peter Slezak led a PsychSoc Forum "Is Psychology a Pseudoscience?" and some suggested a debate between Peter and someone from the faculty would be good. So here it is. Peter suggests that psychology is not as "hard" a science as physics or chemistry and that psychologists have "physics envy". Prof Jim Kehoe will be defending psychology as a mainstream science. Expect to be educated and entertained. The speakers will both have 15 minutes and then the floor will be opened so anyone can get into the ring!

PSYCHSOC AGM

When: 3pm Thursday March 20

Where: Level 10 Matthews Staff Room

What: Psychsoc Annual General Meeting. Vote for and/or become a part of the PsychSoc organising committee. Taking a position is a great way of getting to know other students while playing a part in the running of the society for one of UNSW's most popular fields of study.
There are the "top 5" which are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and ARC Representative. Year reps are very important for advertising events before lectures. An education adviser can help organise forums. An unlimited amount of people can be "social co-ordinator" to help organise and advertise events. We especially need a new Webmaster/IT Executive, with HTML knowledge, or ideally more, to update and even redesign the website.
Please only run for a position if you are serious about the organisation of a student society, and want to actually work at it. Thus, students only taking Psychology 1A as an elective are not advised to run for a position, nor are students who are not looking to study Psychology seriously. Feel free to email us at psychsoc_unsw at yahoo.com to express your interest in a position, or to find out more details about what responsibilities a certain position would hold.

Good luck,

Patrick

Come meet us at our stall at O Week, and unlike other societies on campus, there is no membership fee if you're a Psychology student!
Finally, we're looking for new executives for a range of positions in PsychSoc, so if you're interested in playing a part in the running of the society for one of the most popular fields of study at uni, we especially want to see you at O Week!

Have a good year,

PsychSoc Forum: 'How to Succeed in Psychology Exams' with Michelle Kam

We are all going to be studying long hours for exams over the coming weeks - so why not learn how to study effectively and use our time wisely to achieve the best marks possible? It's the whole 'study smarter not harder' thing. This way we can achieve good grades and hopefully relax a bit more at the same time. Michelle Kam is currently studying M. Org Psyc/PHD and is a class tutor, so has lots of knowledge of study and exams. She is going to give a half hour talk on studying effectively and then we have 20 minutes to ask her questions on everything we want to know about studying. Come along and enjoy an hour of edutainment on a topic that is relevant for all of us!
When: 4pm, Thursday 25 October
Where: Mathews 511
$: Free!

A Message from ENVISION

TEAM ENVISION looks forward to a 2008 in which both PsychSoc and ENVISION, if elected to run COMSOC, will run combined events that will expand the social network of university students as well as form closer faculty relations between COMSOC and PsychSoc. We would love the support of PsychSoc, in which every vote for ENVISION is one step closer to making this vision a reality.

End Message.

ASSSoc Logo Design

Our friends at ASSSoc are having a competition for a new legible, simple and attractive logo for their society, and they want your help. It doesn't matter if you're not an Advanced Science student, whoever has the best design will be rewarded with a $50 UNSW Bookshop Voucher and also the honour of having their design as the new logo for one of the newest societies on campus. Send entries to asssoc@gmail.com with your name and student number. Visit their site for more details. They say it closes Friday October 12th, but if your design is that good, send it anyway!

Psychsoc Forum: 'Is Psychology Pseudo-Science?' with Dr Peter Slezak

On Wednesday 10 October, PsychSoc is having a forum exploring the scientific basis of psychology compared to other disciplines such as physics and chemistry. Dr Peter Slezak is a senior lecturer in Cognitive Science in the school of History and Philosophy of Science. He has many publications and has appeared on ABC TV's Lateline and Radio National's "The Philosopher's Zone".
If you have opinions on the scientific basis of psychology then come along! Peter is a charismatic speaker and we're hoping to generate some good discussion. For those interested, some may walk down to the Regent Hotel on Anzac parade for a pub meal afterwards. See you at Mathews 511 5-6pm!

Careers Night with Clinical Psychologist Dr Gary Fulcher (as seen on 'Enough Rope')

Our current Education Advisor Ben Walker has organised another Careers Night for Psyc students on Thursday 20th September, with Clinical Psychologist Dr Gary Fulcher. This will be a unique opportunity for students to hear about how to become a CP and their day to day worklife. Dr Gary Fulcher has an exceptional story because he was involved in a severe motor vehicle accident and doctors said he would never work again. However, he used principles of CP to help himself recover and is now again active. Because of his amazing story he has been interviewed by Andrew Denton on Enough Rope and the footage can be seen here.
The careers night will run from 6-7pm in Mat 1016 (near the psyc office) and will include a presentation and question and answer time.

Patrick, PsychSoc.

Please go to the forums by clicking on the tuition link on the right.

The following information is needed from tutors:

- subject levels taught e.g. psyc2001, 3001 (and grade received - distinction minimum. This will be checked)
- tutoring rate
- availability
- any additional info.

THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR - KEEPING YOU POSTED

A quick word from the website admin.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday: ready again to hit Semester 1 by continuing to hand in assignments late and study for exams on the last day. For those commencing their first year studies in Psychology, welcome and everyone at PsychSoc hopes that you enjoy your first year of Psychology and will consider taking it further.

A few things regarding this website that people need to know: This website and our mailing list are our main channel for information to get to you. Critical updates and student opportunities (psych and non-psych) will be regularly posted General Announcements forum page. So read it and read it often. Also, we encourage students to join the mailing list so that we can get information directly to you (to join, email psychsoc_unsw@yahoo.com with the subject heading “MAILING LIST”. We have many events already planned for this year, so unless you want to miss out, read this website and check your email oftenJ.

Another important thing: Over the holidays, you may have noticed a new forum. This is for you to post messages, questions, answers, etc. You will, unfortunately, need to register to use it. But registration is free and will take two minutes of your time. Forums are not moderated by lecturers, so the code of conduct is pretty lax. But the usual rules do apply - no foul language, no trading of assignments, etc etc.
